Grapes drying for Amarone at Trabucchi Great Amarone - The First Steal of the New YearThese days we see a number of close-outs and other discounted offers from importers, but few are for wines we actually admire - the last one here that you may recall was the ridiculously low-priced Ducroux Cote Rotie; now we’ve found another: Trabucchi 2002 Amarone Cereolo. Trabucchi is an organic estate, and low yields (about half of what’s permitted) and natural yeast fermentations contribute to the depth and purity of their wines. The wine has plenty of classic Amarone character – rich, full-bodied, redolent of spice and dried fruit. The 2002 vintage may be a bit lighter than some, with the real advantage is that the wine is fresher and brighter than many heavy Amarones that are so tough to pair with food. We are certainly in high Amarone season – the wine will go beautifully with any number of winter dishes. This week we are partnering with our friends at Snooth.com to get the word out; as their resident wine expert Greg Dal Piaz writes: “Simply put, this is great Amarone, and a great deal”.

Misc. Italy Trabucchi 2002 Amarone della Valpolicella CereoloWe don't usually use (borrow? steal?) tasting notes from other writers, but Greg Dal Piaz has taken the words out of my mouth, so to speak. Besides, we think he's one of the very best tasters we know. "The nose here starts off with a wickedly floral edge that is joined by notes of crushed raspberries, cocoa powder, mineral flecked earth and aromatic wood smoke. In the mouth this is full yet remains transparent with a fine spine of acidity and super fine tannins all draped in ruby red velvet. The fruit is intense, spicy like wild raspberries, and yet remarkably fresh and juicy. While rich this is rather elegant for Amarone and so well balanced that it’s the rare Amarone that is perfect for the dinner tale, at least the winter table. This is still showing a very youthful side, and I expect it can age read more...well for many years but I would opt to drink it over the near term to enjoy this incredible fruit. Christian Ducroux's Regnie vines Regnie/New York! Charly Thevenet's 2008 Grain et Granit and Christian Ducroux's 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau "Prologue"!We're still taking calls from Beaujolais fans hoping for more of the 2007 Charly Thevenet Grain et Granit, surely one of the most beautiful wines of the vintage. The 2008 has just arrived and it's a stunning wine in the same style as the 2007, perhaps with a little extra richness as the month of September featured sunshine and north winds which dried and concentrated the grapes. Limited quantity so don't delay. From Christian Ducroux in Regnie, we've just received his 2009 Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau Sans Souffre! Certified Bio since 1985, Ducroux has mastered the art of wine-making without sulfur, producing wines of great aromatic complexity, completely expressive of the granitic terroir. He is one of the most advanced practioners of Biodynamic wine-making and we are honored to have his unique Beaujolais at Chambers Street! Items Mentioned in this Article:
Beaujolais Thevenet, Charly 2008 Regnie Grain et GranitCharly Thevenet is the son of Jean-Paul Thevenet and this is his second vintage from his own 1.5 hectare plot of 75 year-old vines in Regnie, farmed with biodynamic methods and vinified with minimal SO2 (20mg/L total). The wine is aged for 12 months in 4 year-old Burgundy barrels. In 2008 he harvested quite late looking for a bit more maturity and while the wine is quite ripe it is beautifully balanced and has good length. The aromas of cherry, strawberry and violet are very pretty with quite deep and persistent black cherry and berry fruit on the palate. A delicious wine to drink now but it should develop nicely for another 5 to 8 years. Discountable to $28.79 on a case, it is well worth the price as the top Cru Beaujolais remain one of the greatest values in wine today. Highly recommended! red | 45 in stock | Natural | $31.99 |

Ducroux 2009 Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau PrologueChristian Ducroux's vineyard work is extraordinary! In 2009 he fashioned new plowing tools so that all vineyard work, including the harvest, is now done with horses. He will not spray to contol mildew with copper sulfate, which is permitted in organic farming, as he feels that it harms the microbial life of the soil. Of course he is certified Biodynamic and vinfies most of his wines without sulfur. The 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau Sans Souffre is labeled Prologue says Ducroux "thus to avoid the pejoritive connotation of the name Nouveau, as this wine should be tasted in the Spring following the harvest when it will develop all it's potential." The wine has just shipped so we would recommend waiting a week or two before trying it and please keep some to drink in the Spring. Ducroux's vineyards in the hamlet of Thulon are at very high altitude, where the degraded granite gives light-bodied wines with complex aromas that seem to change from minute to minute, lovely strawberry fruit and a refreshing finish that makes you want to try it again and again... The 2009 Prologue is a superb natural wine in the style of Pierre Overnoy - unfined, unfiltered and without sulfur, it should be decanted to separate the sediment and for aeration. Only 15 cases are available. red | 93 in stock | BioDynamic | $13.99 |
2007 Domaine Denis BacheletCharming, transparent, refined, pure and elegant. These words keep cropping up in the reports on the 2007 Red Burgundy vintage. Allen Meadows of burghound.com says, "They convey an underlying sense of terroir better than any vintage since 2001 and if one had to try to encapsulate the character of 2007 by comparing it to another vintage, a blend of 2000 & 2001 would accurately sum them up..." These wines have the soft fruit and ripe tannins of the 2000 vintage combined with the spine of acidity of 2001 - these factors combine to create a tension in the wines that gives them a certain lift and liveliness. From the Bourgogne Rouge up to the Grand Crus these wines are forward and pretty and show well in their youth and will age gracefully for years. We think that this is a classic vintage for mid-term drinking - not a "big" vintage, it is a refined vintage. It will not go into hibernation for years like the 2005s have. Burgundy in particular is a wine of delicacy and finesse, not of over extraction and density. In the 2007s there is a real sense of place, the Volnays smell and taste and act like Volnays, the Chambolles fairly scream Chambolle and Gevrey Chambertin has the oyster shell and limestone minerality that we associate with Chambertin.
Domaine Bachelet in Gevrey Chambertin - 3.83 hectares owned by the domaine. Clive Coates in his new book "The Wines of Burgundy" awards the Domaine Denis Bachelet three stars, the highest rating he awards any domaine, even though there is only one small parcel of Grand Cru. Bachelet is a tiny domaine and every year I am excited when we get our allocation of Denis Bachelet's wines - "...harmonious, pure and understated" says Coates - these are among our most favorite Burgundies. Items Mentioned in this Article:
Cote-de-Nuit Bachelet 2007 Cote de Nuits-Villages This is from 4 parcels in Brochon. In 2007 the Haut Cotes de Nuits and Fixin and some of the more rustic appellations made more sophisticated wine than usual because of the ripeness and suppleness of the tannins. This wine has a wonderful tension and vibrancy. Delicious for drinking over the next 5 to 8 years. jbt

Bachelet 2007 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles VignesThe 2007 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is from vines aged 60-70 years. This wine is deep and rich and sappy and has lots of dry extract and stuffing, dominated by black and blue fruits. This is a wonderful wine to cellar and watch develop, as it will get better and better over the next few years, soon reaching a plateau of lovely maturity. This wine is in beautiful balance and has bright fruit, and great concentration. By comparison, Armand Rousseau's Gevrey Chambertin is made from the young vines of the 1er Cru Cazetiers and the Grands Crus - a wonderful and rare wine, but it doesn't have the depth or persistence of this wine and is more expensive. jbt

Marc Ollivier Marc Ollivier's 2007 Granite de Clisson - Simply Superb!Terroir in the AOC Muscadet Sevre et Maine is largely a story of granite, resulting from a billion-year-old upswelling of molten rock called the Massif Armoricain. Some of this granite remains near the surface where it has weathered to unique nutrient-rich clays, in other areas it has been changed into metamorphic schists and gneiss giving somewhat lighter soils. Since 1984, Marc Ollivier has been producing some of the finest wines in the Loire Valley, primarily from vineyards on the granitic soils around Maisdon-sur-Sevre and Clisson. The most complex and long-aging Muscadets are produced from granite terroirs, such as Michel Bregeon's "Cuvee Gorgeois", Guy Bossard's "Expression de Granite," Luneau-Papin's "L d'Or" - and Marc’s "Clos des Briords" (from old vines on Granite de Chateau Thebault, first produced in 1988). Growers around the town of Clisson who have vineyards on the unique, very dense stone of the area have petitioned the INAO for "Cru Communal" status, reflecting their unusual soils and involving stringent quality standards, and in 2005 Marc produced his first "Granite de Clisson" from a plot of 60 to 90 year-old vines in the Pepiere vineyard. Aged on the lees for 24 months, the wine possesses fantastic depth and aromatic complexity and will benefit from 10 to 15 years of aging. (Paradoxically, it cannot be labeled “Sur Lie” as it violates the current regulations which permit only nine months of aging) Marc has just released the 2007 Granite de Clisson, and although the vintage was more difficult, giving yields of only 20 hl/ha and a moderate 12.2 degrees alcohol, the elegance, balance and depth of this wine are simply astounding.
Jean-Paul Brun with shipping manager Jackie Bonne Année from Terres Dorées - Le Beaujolais Nouveau Est Arrivé!A little late, you say...? Items Mentioned in this Article:
Terres Dorees 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau Cuvee PremiereIt was early November when we realized that the New York importer for Louis/Dressner Selections had not ordered any Nouveau from Jean-Paul Brun. We have no idea why, it being always the best Nouveau and 2009 being the first really good vinrtage since 2005. Go figure. Anyway we promtly ordered some ourselves and it has finally arrived, only 6 weeks late! It's absolutely delicious with lush strawberry/raspberry aromas and a supple palate with good balancing acidity, in other words, yummy (and less expensive than those shipped in November) so don't delay, we have only 20 cases.... red | 9 in stock | Natural | $11.99 |

Loire Huet 2002 Vouvray Petillant Brut(Note; The current cuvée is the second bottling and was disgorged in the summer of 2009. There will be a third, no doubt more expensive, and final bottling, labeled "Reserve" in 2010) This Champagne look-a-like is toasty, biscuity, yeasty and full of apples, baking spices and pears. The mousse is so fine it tastes like it should be some $300 tete de cuvee from some huge luxury goods company . . .but wait a second its not. It's an organic, biodynamic, hand harvested, 4 years lees aged kick-ass value. Would love to stick this in a blind tasting of vintage Champagne. white sparkling | 21 in stock | BioDynamic | $27.99 |
Spain Table Castellroig 2007 Penedes Cava Brut Castellroig is one of the few cava producers in Penedes working with organic methods (not certified), harvesting by hand and even, we're told, fermenting with only native yeasts. They have a remarkable understanding of their vineyards and have mapped out every shift in terroir on their property. This fanatical approach to quality shows in the bottle. The focus of this cuvee is Xarlel-lo, my personal preference of the Cava grapes due to it's lime zest, salt and mineral flavors. The result is pure incisive flavors and refreshing stuff, plain and simple. cb white sparkling | 94 in stock | $11.99 | Non-Discountable |

This is a superb Champagne of terroir, grapes grown without herbicides or pesticides, fermented with wild yeasts, with no dosage or filtration. This is rich and intense Champagne that can compliment many foods and meats. Prévost, a former employee of Selosse, did not put the vintage date on the bottle, but it is all 2007 fruit. white sparkling | 95 in stock | $86.99 | Non-Discountable |

One of the best Champagne buys in the store - it is incredible that this quality is available for under $40. Suave and polished, with bright fresh fruit notes of apple, browned butter and cashew. This is a seductive Champagne classic in style (50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) with depth and precision. Next to this most of the NV offerings from the big-house brands seem shallow in comparison. It's a difference of character, and depth, and there is a liveliness here never found in mass-produced Champagne. RSG white sparkling | 23 in stock | $37.99 | Non-Discountable |

The non-dosage Champagnes are fermented entirely in stainless steel or enamel, and there is no chaptalization, fining, filtering, or cold-stabilization.
This Blanc de Noirs is from the lieu-dit "Val Vilaine." The 2007 bottling is a more mineral-driven than past vintages. It is linear, elegant, and crunchy with delicate red-fruit profile.

Marguet Pere and Fils 2002 Champagne Brut Grand Cru2002 is a stellar vintage for Champagne - marked by great quality and concentration, balance and harmony and longevity.
Marguet is a small up-and-coming producer who mainly sources fruit from organic grand cru and premier cru sites. Quality grapes and meticulous cellar work, make for great wines.
The 2002 bottling is 70 percent Chouilly Chardonnay and 30 percent Pinot Noir from Bouzy. This wine is available and forthcoming, with bountiful fruit - red, citrus, pit, it seems to have it all. Vinified entirely in enameled tanks, this is pure expression of 2002 fruit - and a total steal. RSG white sparkling | 10 in stock | $46.99 | Non-Discountable |
Claude Corbon 2000 Champagne Brut Four generations of growers and bottling their own wine since 1971, this small estate sells most of their grapes, but releases about 15000 bottles a year. The 2000 Blanc de Blancs is 100% Avize fruit and is a lively and classic style with an abundance of Chardonnay character - apples and lemons and striking minerality. white sparkling | 12 in stock | $52.99 | Non-Discountable |
Georges Laval NV Champagne Cumieres Premier Cru Brut NatureThis tiny, tiny estate is the epitome of handmade. Georges Laval makes a miniscule amount of wines (we are one of the few places in NY offering Laval), which are very much terroir-driven. The estate has been organic since 1971 and is certified with Ecocert - fermentation takes place in barrel with indigenous yeasts, there is no fining, filtration or cold-stabilization and minimal use of sulfur.
The Brut Nature is currently predominantly 2005 fruit with 10% 2004 reserves. It is 50% Chardonnay and then split between Pinot Noir and Meunier. This is a mineral driven, svelte Champagne with ballerina grace and delicacy. Exceptionally small production and limited - worth it to secure a bottle while it's here.
