Once again we are taking your requests for Rieslings from some of the most outstanding producers in the world. We know these laundry list emails can be a little intimidating, but you can trust that we have pared the options down to the wines that most caught our attention... if there's something not listed here (or in our previous 08 German email) that's on your radar, we would be more than happy to do what we can to get the wine in your hands. This is a Kabinett and Spatlese vintage, and while you may be weary because we've become accustomed to some very ripe wines of late, remember that relative to what German wine-law requires these beauties are still coming in at over-qualified levels of ripeness. There is plenty of potential here for aging and huge potential for a transparent view of terroir. We are as happy as ever to be enjoying yet another bright moment for German Riesling.

It's that time of year again: officially summer and officially time to drink Riesling and pluck up your share of this year's collector items.

It's fair to repeat here the mantra of the vintage: 2008 is the right kind of vintage at the right time. Very little Auslese was made, and the Kabinetts and Spatleses are on the restrained side, especially considering what our palates are acclimated to after the last couple of vintages. But we needed a drink-me vintage, and there will be a great place for these wines - it IS an acid-freak-rock-head vintage, and consequently I am happier with the balance of the wines that have some sort of perceptible RS - as unhip as that may make me. I think these wines will surprise us yet.

First up (yes, more to come), some gems from Prum, Donnhoff, Willi Schaefer and AJ Adam!

One of our most interesting Loire Valley wines has just arrived - the Clos Roche Blanche Pineau D'Aunis Rosé! It was still fermenting in early February but has finally finished, dry at 12% with hints of red currant, raspberry and spice. Slightly leesy and bottled with little or no SO2, this is a light and lovely natural wine that should not be missed...
A new and most welcome addition to our Loire collection is the Domaine du Closel (now labeled Chateau des Vaults) Crémant de Loire Brut Sauvage. Evelyne de Jessy has made a blend of 85% Chenin Blanc and 15% Cabernet Franc with no dosage which is absoultely delicious, and the introductory price makes it a great value. Hints of citrus and apple with subtle red fruits on the palate, balanced and bone dry, it's a great aperitif or celebratory drink for all occasions! (It's from the 2005 vintage but can't legally be dated...)

Earlier this month I traveled with Terry Theise visiting his growers in Austria, and the wines of Nikolaihof-Wachau were truly the most profound wines of the tour...

We're glad to see that the New York Times chose some very good rosés in yesterday's article (at least the five that we sell anyway) so here's a heads-up before they disappear....
